ROBERT GORMAN has significant experience in counseling clients that range from start-ups to Fortune 500 corporations and the United States Federal Government in various legal matters such as patent preparation and prosecution matters, patent-related due diligence, intellectual property licensing, patent portfolio analysis, as well as in patent infringement and invalidity assessments.

            Mr. Gorman is a registered patent attorney, and over the years has helped clients such as AT&T, Hewlett Packard, Bosch, Honeywell, and the United States Government as represented by the Department of Veterans Affairs, in assessing, procuring, and asserting patents in technical fields such as mechanical devices, medical devices, telecommunications, computer hardware and software, electronics, thin film processes, microprocessor based technologies, MEMs and sensor based devices, aerospace and defense/military systems, and nanotechnology based applications.  Throughout his fifteen years of legal practice, Robert Gorman has also counseled many overseas clients from Japan, Germany, Korea, and elsewhere, and has litigated cases up to the Federal Circuit level and has worked on sophisticated trademark and patent cases against companies such as Hoechst, Samsung, and the Body Shop.

            Prior to successfully building his own practice, Mr. Gorman worked for many years as an in-house attorney at tech companies and universities located in Silicon Valley and New Jersey, as well as in New York where he worked for the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski.   In these positions, he advised on a number of high profile projects, including the creation of the State of New Jersey Nanotechnology Consortium between New Jersey Institute of Technology and Lucent, and helped create in-house legal operations and technology transfer operations.

            Mr. Gorman is a licensed member of the Bars of New York, New Jersey and is also admitted to practice before several different federal bars, including the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.  

            Mr. Gorman also serves his country as an Officer in the Judge Advocate Corps (JAG), United States Air Force Reserves, where he practices many aspects of law for the U.S. Air Force.

            Mr. Gorman received his undergraduate degree in Physics from Rutgers University, his law degree (Juris Doctorate) from the University of Miami, and his Masters of Science from the University of Pennsylvania.  He is also proficient in the Japanese language.

 

            J. DAVID SMITH is a registered patent attorney with about seventeen years experience in the chemical and biotechnical arts. He is a member of the California State Bar, Colorado Bar and the District of Columbia Bar as well as the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Federal Circuit Bar. He received his J.D. from the University of Denver College of Law in 1993. Further, he successfully completed the pre-clinical basic science curriculum at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1989 and performed research in the field of genetics at the time. He also has a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Millsaps College.

                David has worked with many start-up companies as well as established companies providing strategic counseling, patent portfolio management and prosecution as well as rendering opinions regarding freedom to operate, patent infringement and validity over a wide range of technologies including pharmaceuticals, genetics, recombinant DNA, immunology, gene therapy, microarrays, physical chemistry, bacteriology, and laboratory devices. He has significant experience with opposition proceedings before the European and Japanese Patent Offices and with patent Interference and Reexamination proceedings before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Additionally, he has assisted with several patent infringement litigations involving biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.

He began his career working for Lyon & Lyon in San Diego, California and then worked for Howrey & Simon in Menlo Park, California, Townsend & Townsend & Crew in San Francisco, California and Morrison & Foerster in Palo Alto, California.

 

            DAVID A. JACKSON is a registered patent attorney whose practice includes all phases of intellectual property including the evaluation, preparation, prosecution and licensing of patents, trademarks and copyrights. Although Mr. Jackson has been involved in a variety of technical disciplines, he presently concentrates in the field of biotechnology. Mr. Jackson received his B.S. from Tufts University (1965) in a combined major of chemistry and biology, and his J.D. from the Washington College of Law (1970), American University, Washington, DC. From 1970 to 1973, he worked as a patent examiner for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and from 1973 to 1976, he was employed by the Olin Corporation in New Haven, CT.

                Mr. Jackson entered the private practice of law in 1977 and is licensed to practice in the States of New Jersey and Virginia, as well as before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

He is a member of the Bergen County, Passaic County, Essex County, New Jersey State and American Bar Associations, as well as the American Intellectual Property Law Association, New Jersey Patent Law Association, Connecticut Patent Law Association, the American Chemical Society, and the Association of University Technology Managers.
